Meet the Family
Jeff and Theresa Miller weren’t satisfied with their current kitchen. It felt crowded if more than one person was cooking or prepping. The kitchen didn’t offer much storage and was secluded from the neighboring family room. That was tough with two parents and two children! They knew they needed additional space to cook as a family, but it never seemed like the right time to remodel.
Everything changed when Jeff’s mother's health began to fail. In just two months, she moved in with them. The additional person caused the kitchen felt even more cramped and cut off from the rest of the house. They reached out to us because they needed a more functional space.

The Consultation Process
When they reached out to us, the Millers' concerns were their lack of storage space and the cramped layout of the kitchen. They also expressed a hope to open the room up in order to clearly see the family room both for inclusion and safety with a toddler running about.
We matched the Miller family with several of our pre-screened contractors. Both homeowners work during the weekdays, so we scheduled three-weekend appointments for their estimates.
The Miller family decided on one of the contractors who they felt best understood their vision. Together, they created a functional design that rearranged and expanded storage, as well as opened up the room for more cooking space and a clear line of sight to the family room. The couple was impressed by the contractors’ ability to listen to them and interpret their needs into a clear plan.
Kitchen Remodeling Results
The largest challenge was lack of space. The contractor decided to remove part of the wall that was cutting off the family room. By eliminating it, the room instantly felt larger and more accessible to the rest of the home.
The second challenge was storage. They originally had only a row of cabinets underneath the counter and had manually installed a couple of shelves overhead. With a family of five now, food and utensils were piling onto the counter. With a larger space now available, the contractor felt confident in building a small granite island to generate more storage and counter space for food preparation. The homeowners loved the idea.
Our Bright Builders prescreened contractor replaced the shelves with gorgeous, pale green cabinets overhead. This decluttered the entire counter, gave the kitchen a cleaner and more organized look while infusing the space with color. As a bonus, the color choice is extremely trendy!
With these adjustments, the kitchen was so spacious that it could accommodate statement pieces. Without breaking the budget, the contractors recommended a few lighting fixtures that maintained the charm of the house while offering soft-to-the-eye illumination when the natural light from the window wasn’t enough.
Later on, we followed up with them and found that they were thrilled. The kids could roam around the kitchen without it being a safety hazard. Jeff’s mother could sit in the family room and still be part of the conversation in the kitchen. The new design gave them more opportunities to spend time together before, during, and after every meal. That level of satisfaction is what we strive for and employ here at Bright Builders.
